Dr. David Deane

David Deane is an Associate Professor of Theology at the Atlantic School of Theology in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he teaches Catholic Theology, Christian doctrine, Christian anarchism, Moral Theology, and Apologetics. He received his doctorate from Trinity College, University of Dublin, where he also lectured, and was a fellow of the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences.

In 2005 he moved to the United States to take a position as Theologian in Residence at Colorado State University, where we won a teacher of the year award in 2006.

He’s written for the Times of London, the Irish Times, and the Irish Independent, and his scholarly books include “Nietzsche and Theology: Nietzshean Thought in Christological Anthropology” (2007), “Still Unhealed: Treating the Pathology in the Clergy Sexual Abuse Crisis” (2019), and “The Tyranny of the Banal: On the Renewal of Catholic Moral Theology” (Rowman & Littlefield, 2023).

His academic work uses doctrinal insights from the past (often patristic and medieval) to offer solutions for contemporary theological problems. “The goal of my work is to produce theology that helps to grow faith in Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. I believe that theology can help people to come to know and relate to Jesus Christ.”
