The Athenaeum Chorale and Mount St. Mary’s Seminary Latin Schola together present a Solemn Vespers, the musical centerpiece of which is Johann Sebastian Bach’s radiant Magnificat in D Major, BWV 243. This masterpiece will be accompanied by an orchestra of specialists from across North America playing on eighteenth-century instruments, allowing visitors and seminarians a rare opportunity to encounter the sound world Bach himself knew. The work itself unfolds as a series of musical meditations, with each movement illuminating a verse of the Blessed Virgin Mary’s great canticle of praise: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord.”
