Ensemble Con Fuoco brings sacred music from two very different eras into conversation in one powerful Lenten concert pairing Membra Jesu Nostri by acclaimed Baroque composer Dieterich Buxtehude with To the Hands by Pulitzer Prize–winning composer Caroline Shaw.
Buxtehude’s Membra Jesu Nostri is a cycle of seven cantatas meditating on the crucified body of Christ, widely regarded as one of the most intimate and expressive sacred works of the seventeenth century. Shaw’s To the Hands offers a contemporary reflection on human dignity and vulnerability in our own time. Heard together, these works invite thoughtful listening to how sacred music continues to speak, across centuries, to enduring spiritual and human concerns.
The performance will feature continuo accompaniment by Alex Buiel, Director of Music at St. Mary Church.
(Concert repeats Sunday at St. Catharine of Siena Parish)
