Pietà: A Mother’s Lament, an exhibit of 40 modern works of art that depict Mary holding the crucified body of her son Jesus, will run through May 9 in the Stuart and Mimi Rose Gallery on the first floor of Roesch Library.
The exhibit aligns with the 40-day journey to Easter, making it an opportunity for personal reflection and community devotion.
“Unfortunately, many are familiar with the grief that Mary must have experienced,” said Curator Bridget Retzloff. “The emotion apparent in these depictions is a palpable reminder of her humanity. Amidst the sorrow in these scenes, some may find glimmers of hope — hope that must have given Mary strength, too.”
Featuring works on loan from John A. Kohan’s Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection and selections from the Marian Library’s collection, this exhibit presents a wide range of artistic styles and cultural interpretations of the Pietà.
Guided meditation prompts will be available in the gallery to help visitors engage deeply with the art.
Open during Roesch Library hours from March 4 through May 9, 2025. Check the calendar before visiting. Hours vary.
Closed March 15, 16 and 22; April 18–20
