Saved by Beauty is a play by Rev. Albert J. DeGiacomo on the life of Dorothy Day and Forster Batterham. It will be performed as Readers Theater
Exploring the dramatic question, “Can the world be saved by beauty,” the play presents the cost of Day’s conversion: her long-suffering fidelity to God and the Church, following the abortion she had in her youth. The play attempts to show that Day’s life included – but was more than – her well known protests, arrests, Catholic Worker newspaper and houses of hospitality; but that it also embraced critically important, yet less well known, commitments to people such as her common law husband Forster, her daughter Tamar, and her comrade-playwright Eugene O’Neill, as well as friends and colleagues like Peter Maurin, Peggy Baird and Sister Aloysia. All these commitments and relationships together created a saving beauty.
