Dr. Brennan Pursell will present the University of Cincinnati Catholic Studies Program’s 2025 Conway Lecture: Artificial Intelligence and the Catholic Church.” This annual public lecture shares the best in Catholic scholarship with the university community.
An adult convert to Catholicism, he did his PhD in Early Modern European History at Harvard and began his teaching career at DeSales University in Pennsylvania. Some years later, he completed an MBA and is now Professor of Business and Director of the Center for Data Analytics and Applied AI at DeSales University, where he teaches courses in Data Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, and Management in both undergraduate and graduate programs.
His 2020 book, Outsmarting AI: Power, Profit, and Leadership in the Age of Machines (Rowman & Littlefield), addresses widespread myths about artificial intelligence, clarifies the technology’s capabilities and limitations across economic sectors, and shows how to implement it profitably, ethically, and in accordance with the law. Among other activities, he recently participated in a project to educate and prepare American state courts to prepare for and defend themselves against digital mis- and disinformation, cyber-attacks, and AI deepfakes.
