St. Ursula Academy, LaSalle Win Sports/Character Award
The Ohio High School Athletic Association has awarded the Harold A. Meyer Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity (SEI) Award to LaSalle High School for the eleventh consecutive year, and to St. Ursula Academy for the seventh consecutive year.
The award is given to schools that demonstrate their commitment to the three "SEI" values in both their schools and their communities. For every year they enter, they complete an eight-part program that includes presentations to parents, teams, and fans; an ongoing campaign for the SEI values throughout the student body; and an annual evaluation of all coaches.
La Salle also met the OHSAAs newly created Respect the Game challenge award. Recipients demonstrate they have developed a comprehensive student-athlete campaign; a coaches campaign; a student body, student support group, parents and fan campaign, and a public address announcers campaign. La Salle recieved a Respect The Game award with a sportsmanship pledge to display at the school.
To set and keep its sportsmanship and character goals, SUA formed a Good Sportsmanship committee in 2004. Composed of students, coaches, past parents, and faculty members, it meets four times a year.
"We believe that learning to treat others with respect and acting with ethics and integrity is something all of our students can carry with them through their lives, in competition and beyond," said St. Ursula Academy Principal Craig Maliborski.
La Salle fields teams in Cross-Country, Football, Golf and Soccer in fall; Basketball, Bowling, Ice Hockey, Swimming & Diving and Wrestling in winter; and Baseball, Tennis, Track & Field and Volleyball in spring. La Salle has the reigning Division I State Champions in Basketball and Track & Field.
St. Ursula offers Cross Country, Field Hockey, Golf, Soccer, Tennis, Volleyball, Basketball, Swimming and Diving, Bowling, Lacrosse, Softball, and Track & Field.
The OHSAA awarded the Meyer Award to 20 schools this year; La Salle and St. Ursula Academy are the only two Catholic schools.
