Try a Latin Mass-Style Pre-Lenten Mission
Looking for a different sort of retreat? Holy Family Church, Dayton's Latin mass parish, invites all Catholics to one or all of its pre-Lenten mission events on January 28-30.
Fr. George McInnis from the Fathers of Mercy in Bowling Green, KY, will present three short conferences beginning Saturday. Each will followed by Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.
Saturday's conference, "Truth," begins at 10:30 am. Its preceded by Tridentine Low Mass at 9 am. Sunday's 1 pm Conference, "The Commandments," follows Tridentine High Mass at10:30 am. Monday's conference, "The Mass and the Real Presence," is at 7 pm. Organizers say each conference will last about an hour, including Benediction.
All are welcome, young or old, says Holy Family's pastor, Mark Wojdelski, FSSP. "These kinds of opportunities for spiritual growth and renewal should not be neglected. It is all too easy to become complacent and satisfied with the status quo in our relationship with God, but all the great spiritual doctors of the Church say that this is the surest way to lose ones soul, as the man who does not swim against the current of the river is carried downstream by it."
Holy Family is a parish of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, staffed by the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter (FSSP -- from its acronym in Latin). All masses are celebrated in the extraordinary form (also called the Traditional Latin Mass, or Tridentine mass) authorized by Rome. Fr. Wojdelski says that visitors are welcome, whether or not they have ever attended an extraordinary form mass, and that he will be available throughout the mission if visitors need help or pointers.
The Congregation of the Fathers of Mercy was founded in France to reevangelize Catholics after the French Revolution, but is now based in Kentucky and concentrates on parish missions and retreats in North America and Australia. The Fathers of Mercy describe their charism as one of mercy, missionary spirit, and "zeal for the salvation of souls." You can get a feel for their distinctive style at their web site.
